In 2022, artist Whitney Claflin published Food & Spirits (Song Cycle, 2022), a book of poems and drawings charting four years of her day-to-day life in New York City, divided into seven sections: Hell, Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll, Body, Mirror, and Heaven. Many of the poems were written in bars and restaurants that have since closed. The book has been reprinted on the occasion of her solo exhibition at MoMA PS1, I was wearing this when you met me, which features a selection of drawings from the publication.
Whitney Claflin's first solo museum exhibition I was wearing this when you met me is currently on view at MoMA PS1 until August 25th. The exhibition features a focused selection of works tracing her distinctive approach to painting and ongoing engagement with notions of infatuation, misrecognition, and waywardness. In addition to paintings, the exhibition also includes drawing, photography, video, and sculptural interventions, highlighting Claflin’s multifaceted approach.
