A prolific sculptor, Jerry the Marble Faun is also the author of The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens: A Memoir of the Beales, the Maysles Brothers, and Jacqueline Kennedy. The memoir, co-written with film historian Tony Maietta, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the legendary Grey Gardens estate, where Jerry worked as a gardener and handyman, and traces the many lives he has lived since.
Jerry Torre (American, born 1955) lives and works in Queens, NY. He has participated in exhibitions at SITUATIONS, New York; Canada, New York; Participant, New York; Castle Gallery, Los Angeles; 2nd Floor Projects, San Francisco; The Elaine de Kooning House, South Hampton; and Bureau of General Services/Queer Division, New York. His work is held in the collection of The Folk Art Museum, New York. While living at Grey Gardens, Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier-Beale gave Jerry the nickname “the Marble Faun,” which Jerry accepted as a fated path to artmaking. In addition to sculpting stone, he has worked as a gardener for the royal family of Saudi Arabia; with actor Wayland Flowers and his puppet, Madame, during their cabaret acts in the ’70s; and as a taxi cab driver in New York City for twenty years. His work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Interview, and Artforum.
