Rirkrit Tiravanija. FEAR EATS THE SOUL Serving Tray

By Rirkrit Tiravanija

Here Tiravanija has appropriated his text from the title of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Ali: Fear Eats the Soul a film which still resonates today with its vibrant questions of race and class raised in 1970s Germany.

The 4-worded phrase used by Rirkrit literally “serves” as a cornerstone of his artistic practice, using appropriated language to underscore the exploration between art and food, and now perfectly encapsulated in a fiberglass tray produced by Cambro, Huntington Beach, CA U.S.A.

These pictures were taken at Rirkrit Tiravanija's 'untitled 1990 (pad thai)' at MoMA PS1 as part of his retrospective exhibition. This interactive “play” restages the iconic night in 1990 when the artist cooked pad thai for an unsuspecting group of gallery goers.
